TORONTO – MLS players have ratified a new collective agreement, paving the way for the return of the league.

The MLS Players Association has confirmed the vote on the ABC, which will last an additional year until the 2025 season. The two sides reached an agreement on a deal in February that spanned 2024, but it was never ratified.

The PA did not provide details on the new ABC. MLS Commissioner Don Garber was scheduled to speak on Wednesday.

The players were reportedly faced with a lockout after the two sides found themselves in an impasse on the concessions but managed to reach an agreement.

The MLSPA said the vote “finalizes a plan to resume the 2020 season and gives players certainty for the months to come. It allows our members to move forward and continue to compete in the game they love.”

“However, we recognize that we are all moving forward – as players, as fans, as companies, as a world – towards a future that seems very different from what we envisioned a few years ago. There are issues that we face collectively that are both more urgent and more important than competition on the field. We are grieving, we are fed up, we are waiting for change and we are waiting for it. action.

“This change will not happen on the ground, but it will come in part thanks to the strength and determination of all those who seek justice and equality. We hope that our return to the field will allow fans a momentary release and a semblance of normality.

“We are committed as a group to do all we can – both as leaders in our sport and in our communities – to help advance our countries, our communities, our league and our sport.”

Players from Toronto FC, the Montreal Impact, the Vancouver Whitecaps and other markets have skipped training in the past two days, with the two teams remaining at odds.

The TFC players also did not train on Wednesday morning.

Although the training sessions are considered voluntary, players participated regularly before Monday.

The MLS season has been suspended since March 12 due to the global pandemic.

On Sunday evening, the Players’ Association announced that its members have approved a package for the 2020 season that includes player pay cuts and additional concessions. He did not provide details although the proposal included participation in a summer tournament in Orlando.

The league declined to comment, but reports quickly revealed that it wanted more concessions.
