The suspension of Internet services was slapped in the provincial capital for about 48 years for containing a burst of hate speech that had covered the sky in social media following a very unfortunate incident of brutal lynching by crowds of young people. in the heavily guarded town of Hazara in Quetta. . The government has already set up an investigation team made up of representatives of the intelligence services to find the motive for the murder and present the report within 15 days. However, the incident provided seasonal vultures with a chance to express their long-held prejudice and hatred against each other and, as a result, social media is becoming the second battleground for haters.

While social media platforms have become a very powerful agent of social change and sparked many revolutions around the world, they have also become potential risks to social orders around the world. The print media and traditional sources of information are in a rapid transformation phase and many renowned newspapers have closed their print editions to publish digitally. The future of the world belongs to digital platforms and no one can dispute the fact. However, one of the disturbing factors that has gripped not only Pakistan but also the whole world is that of fake news. Traditional media platforms such as print newspapers and magazines have professional editors who edit and verify the facts before they are published to the best of their knowledge and satisfaction and are responsible for any misinformation and their consequences. On the contrary, social media platforms are free where anyone can publish anything that considers it news or information, if not a personal whim, hatred or political, social or religious inclination.

The shutdown of Internet services is a temporary solution to an important problem that affects the segments of society that earn their living and earn their living from online income and freelancing. Failure to meet a deadline means the loss of thousands of rupees for a freelancer. Likewise, students who are engaged in research activities find themselves completely helpless without Internet services and even the traditional information industry is heavily dependent on the Internet these days. The Pakistani diaspora abroad has the only source of connectivity via the Internet. Consequently, the closure of services handicaps many positive users.

The solution lies in a middle way where the government should introduce a warning system followed by fines and punishments for social media users who use their accounts for mudling, spreading hate speech and community hatred. This can very well be done through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), where any user who has used such malicious speech can be tracked and punished. It is imperative to emphasize here that the right to information is yet another aspect of history where oppressive governments around the world have resorted to the prohibition of the circulation of legitimate information and the legitimate criticism of governments under the cover of social media regulations and their misuse. Nor are such draconian laws acceptable since they go directly against the fundamental rights of the masses. Therefore, instead of suspending Internet services, the government should opt for other means of controlling hate speech, because the majority of them suffer because of a handful of online criminals.
