American tennis prodigy Coco Gauff appeared during a protest in his hometown of Delray Beach, Florida on Wednesday calling for racial and social justice after the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man killed in custody seen in the United States.

“I was eight when Trayvon Martin was killed. So why am I here at 16 to ask for more change?” said Gauff, a few days after posting a video on social media in which she pledged to use her voice to fight racism.

Martin was an unarmed black teenager whose civilian murder of George Zimmerman 200 miles in Sanford, Florida in 2012 helped spark the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

“It breaks my heart because I am fighting for the future for my brothers,” said Gauff.

“I am fighting for the future of my future children, I am fighting for the future of my future grandchildren.”

Floyd’s death on May 25 sparked a week of sometimes violent protests and civil unrest in cities across the United States.

Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis policeman who appeared in a cellphone video kneeling on Floyd’s neck, has been charged with murder.

Gauff, who became famous after a stunning victory over his idol Venus Williams at Wimbledon last year, spoke at the rally after his grandmother Yvonne Odom, who was his first high school black student in 1961, addressed the crowd.

“It is sad that I am here to protest the same thing it did over 50 years ago,” said Gauff.
