Borussia Mönchengladbach’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League have suffered a setback after their 1-0 away defeat to Freiburg in the Bundesliga match on Friday night, reports.

On entering the match, Friborg had not won its last four games; lose two and shoot two.

Nils Petersen was the hero of Freiburg because his strike in the 58th minute was enough to ensure the victory of his team.

In the 68th minute, Mönchengladbach was reduced to 10 men after Alassane Plea was kicked out after receiving a second yellow card.

The defeat leaves Mönchengladbach in fourth position with 56 points in the classification of 18 teams.

They could fall to fifth place if Bayer Leverkusen – who is currently fifth, along with Mönchengladbach – beat the leader of Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Friday’s victory means that Freiburg is eight positions out of 41 points and is one point out of sixth, which is the qualifying place for the Europa League.
