Melbourne recruit Harley Bennell will play his first AFL match in three years after being named in Simon Goodwin’s side to take on Carlton in Round 2.

The talented forward was given a lifeline by Demons during the off-season after his once-promising AFL career was cruelled by calf injuries during his time in Fremantle.

Bennell has played in just two matches at AFL level since the 2015 season, and none since two appearances in Dockers colours in 2017 under Ross Lyon.

The 27-year-old has impressed in training during the COVID-19 lockdown, and was brought to tears when Goodwin announced his selection at training on Wednesday.

“Harles, I know what it means to you, the game,” Goodwin said.

“I know what it means to your family and you’re ready mate.”

Bennell immediately shared an embrace with his former Suns teammate Steven May following Goodwin’s announcement, with the pair having played together in his first five seasons.

Bennell’s selection is one of a number of feel-good stories for the AFL’s return, with Richmond forward Jack Higgins also set to return after undergoing brain surgery in 2019.
