Thousands Assail Netanyahu Over COVID-19, Alleged Corruption

JERUSALEM – Thousands of Israelis rallied exterior Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem on Saturday as anger mounted over corruption allegations and his dealing with of the coronavirus disaster.

Beyond Jerusalem

Protests have stretched past Netanyahu’s official residence in Jerusalem, with many Israelis gathering on bridges and freeway junctions throughout the nation.

On a busy freeway overpass north of Israel’s industrial hub of Tel Aviv, demonstrators waved black flags and chanted slogans whereas vehicles honked their horns from the highway beneath.

One protester, Yael, stated she had misplaced her job at a Tel Aviv restaurant and that authorities assist has been gradual to come back.

“You’d assume {that a} once-in-a-lifetime disaster like this may push Netanyahu to behave, and it hasn’t. Enough is sufficient,” she stated, declining to present her final identify.

Israel in May lifted a partial lockdown that had flattened an an infection curve. But a second surge of COVID-19 instances and ensuing restrictions have seen Netanyahu’s approval rankings plunge to below 30%.

Many restrictions have since been lifted to revive enterprise, however unemployment hovers at 21.5% and the financial system is predicted to contract 6% in 2020.
