The Nicaraguan government, led by Daniel Ortega, has fired at least ten health workers after questioning the official management of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW), which has alerted the real number of COVID cases, 19 could be higher than the official balance recognized by the authorities.
According to the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health, which was updated last Tuesday, Nicaragua has registered 1,823 positive and 64 pandemic deaths, although medical observers have questioned the official speech for weeks to ensure that the actual number is even several thousand higher .
The authorities have not issued detentions or ordered the closure of educational centers. Ortega, who had disappeared in the middle of a pandemic for a month, was referred to at the end of April as “radicals” and “extremists” who defended the need to stay home and avoid crowds.
In mid-May, more than 700 medical workers wrote to the government to acknowledge the emergency and adopt World Health Organization (WHO) protocols to prevent the system from collapsing. On 6 and 9 June, the authorities ordered the hiring of several signatories with separate letters, which gave no reason not to follow the procedures.
