The Liverpool stars knelt around the central Anfield circle on Monday to show their solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

Virgil van Dijk, James Milner, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold, among others, tweeted a photo of the team with the words “ Unity is strength ”.

The tweets were the latest messages of support from the sports community amid civil unrest in America in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.

Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram fell on one knee after scoring against Union Berlin while Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho celebrated his first goal against Paderborn by revealing a message “ Justice for George Floyd ” under his t -shirt.

The gesture has become a recognized protest since San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick knelt down for the national anthem before a game in 2016.
